Kakobuy shipping cost by country: what actually changes the number

Destination changes more than the rate per kilo — it changes the tax, the paperwork and which lines will even accept your parcel. Country-by-country, without the fake precision.

How the cost is built

Four numbers, in this order: charged weight (the higher of scale and volumetric), the line rate for that weight band, the fuel or peak surcharge of the week, and customs plus any courier handling fee. Destination affects the third and fourth, and sometimes eliminates a line entirely.

How destination changes the shipping bill
RegionTax at importWhat catches people out
European Union21%Import VAT from the first euro; low-value parcels may carry a flat handling duty.
United Kingdom20%VAT at point of sale for low-value consignments; courier handling fee applies.
United Statesde minimisDe minimis rules apply; sales tax is collected by marketplaces, not at import.
Canada13%GST/PST plus a brokerage fee on most courier lines.
Australia10%GST on low-value imports; biosecurity checks on some materials.
Rest of world15%Varies by country; treat the number as a placeholder.

Country by country, in plain terms

Germany

VAT from the first euro, and since 2026 a flat handling charge on low-value parcels in many cases. DHL-class express is fast but strict on declaration; economy air is slower and cheaper per kilo. Budget the tax on the declared value, not the declared "gift" value.

Poland and Czechia

Similar VAT mechanics, lower freight rates on consolidated lines, and a customs office that does inspect. Kakobuy supports PLN and CZK natively, which removes one conversion step — a small but real saving on every order.

United Kingdom

VAT is collected at the point of sale for low-value consignments, and couriers add a handling fee. Express lines are smoother here than in the EU because the paperwork is standardised; economy lines are cheaper but slower to clear.

United States

De minimis rules mean most personal parcels arrive without duty, which is why US buyers see a lower landed cost than European buyers on identical baskets. Sales tax, where it applies, is collected elsewhere — not at import.

Canada and Australia

Both add tax at import and both add a brokerage or handling fee on courier lines. Australia also screens some materials at biosecurity, which adds days rather than money.

Four ways to pay less, ranked by impact

  1. Cut volume, not weight. Removing a shoebox or compressing a puffer changes the billed kilos far more than switching lines.
  2. Consolidate. Three parcels pay three base fees and three handling fees. One parcel pays one.
  3. Change the line. Express bills volume at 5000 and charges more per kilo; it is for urgency, not for value.
  4. Use a coupon. The last 5%. Worth having, never worth planning around.
Run your own numbers in the shipping estimator — it applies the volumetric divisor per line, so the comparison is at least internally consistent.

Questions

Which country is cheapest to ship to?

Among the majors, the United States usually lands cheapest because of de minimis rules; the EU and UK add VAT from the first euro. Within the EU, rates vary more by line than by country.

Should I declare a lower value?

No. It reduces tax and removes your recourse if the parcel is lost or seized. The saving is small; the downside is the whole parcel.

Do tax-free lines really exist?

Duty-inclusive lines exist. "Guaranteed tax-free" does not — a customs authority can inspect any parcel, and branded goods can be seized regardless of the line.
