The $20 shelf: 69 rows, and the freight floor under them
Every "budget finds" list shows you a price and stops. That price is the smallest number in the transaction. This page takes the 69 rows in this index that cost under $20, shows what the tier is actually made of, and puts the fixed cost of a parcel next to each one.
Computed from the same 307-row snapshot the spreadsheet uses, at build time. Freight figures are the planning defaults from the shipping page, not a live Kakobuy quote.
What the tier is actually made of
69 of 307 rows (22.5%) cost under $20, and 39 of those 69 are headwear. T-shirts are the only category where $20 buys the real product (13 rows, median $17.02). There are no shoes in the tier at all — the one row filed under Shoes is a $0.18 football sticker.
| Shelf | Rows | Cheapest | Median | Dearest | What that means |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Headwear | 39 | $1.17 | $15.32 | $19.97 | The tier is mostly this. |
| T-shirts | 13 | $14.58 | $17.02 | $18.92 | The only category where $20 buys the real thing. |
| Accessories | 9 | $0.23 | $1.37 | $17.21 | Keychains, stickers, a watch strap — not the expensive half of the shelf. |
| Other stuff | 3 | $0.93 | $6.45 | $19.26 | Small souvenirs, one shirt. |
| Hoodies & sweaters | 2 | $0.48 | $0.48 | $1.32 | A bracelet filed under hoodies. Data noise, flagged below. |
| Shoes | 1 | $0.18 | $0.18 | $0.18 | A football sticker filed under shoes. There are no shoes under $20. |
| Jackets | 1 | $1.02 | $1.02 | $1.02 | A $1.02 placeholder row, not a jacket. |
| Pants & shorts | 1 | $14.67 | $14.67 | $14.67 | One pair, and it is the top of the tier. |
"Rows" counts rows in the index, not distinct products: a cap listed in eight colourways is several rows. The five smallest shelves are worth reading before you trust their medians — hoodies & sweaters, shoes, jackets are single rows filed by the source catalogue, and one of them is a bracelet under hoodies.
The floor: why a $0.18 row lands at $17.54
A single parcel pays $12.50 for its first kilo and $2.20 handling before any goods are counted, and import VAT is charged on goods plus freight. So the cheaper the row, the larger the share of the bill that has nothing to do with the row: 71% for the sticker, 35% for a median cap, 30% at the top of the tier.
| Row | Goods | Freight | Handling | VAT 21% | Landed | Freight share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The cheapest row in the catalogue — a World Cup sticker | $0.18 | $12.50 | $2.20 | $2.66 | $17.54 | 71% |
| A mid-tier cap — the tier median | $15.32 | $12.50 | $2.20 | $5.84 | $35.86 | 35% |
| The top of the tier — a cap at the ceiling | $19.97 | $12.50 | $2.20 | $6.82 | $41.49 | 30% |
One item per parcel, first-kilo weight, economy line, 21% modelled VAT (Germany charges 19%, Poland 23%). From July 2026 the EU's 150 EUR duty-free threshold is replaced by a flat duty per tariff line, which adds a few euros to any order that clears customs — budget for it rather than being surprised by it.
Bundling is the only real discount
Five $15.32 caps bought together land at about $112.04, against $179.31 as five separate parcels. The goods cost the same $76.60; what changes is that the $12.50 first-kilo charge is paid once and shared. Per item, freight falls from $12.50 to $2.84 — a 4.4× cut with no coupon involved.
| Order shape | Goods | Freight | Handling | VAT 21% | Landed | Freight per item |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Five caps, five parcels | $76.60 | $62.50 | $11.00 | $29.21 | $179.31 | $12.50 |
| Five caps, one 1.2 kg parcel | $76.60 | $14.18 | $2.20 | $19.06 | $112.04 | $2.84 |
| Saved | — | $48.32 | $8.80 | $10.15 | $67.27 | $9.66 |
The 1.2 kg is an assumption, stated so you can check it: five caps and their packaging usually come in near one kilo, and anything past the first kilo is charged at $8.40 per kg. If your basket weighs more, the saving stays — it just shrinks.
Twenty-four rows from the tier
Sorted by price, not by quality — the first tiles are stickers and keychains, because that is genuinely where the bottom of the tier is. The cheapest real garment in the tier is a $14.58 T-shirt, and the most expensive row is a $19.97 cap: the ceiling of "budget" is a cap, which is worth knowing before you paste a $20 filter into a spreadsheet.

The $20 filter is the wrong filter for footwear
Shoes are the most expensive ordinary shelf in this index: 48 rows, a quarter of them under $42.52, and a median of $47.74. Nothing under $20 in this catalogue is a pair of shoes — the one row that claims to be is a sticker. Budget $42.52 and up, and price the parcel before you fall in love with a pair.
See the shelf tableWhat this page cannot tell you
- Weights. The index carries no per-row weight, so every number above assumes the first kilo. A heavy item pays $8.40 per extra kilo and changes the ranking.
- Quality. Price is the only field the source catalogue is consistent about. A cheap row is a cheap row, not a good one — that is what the QC pages are for.
- Live prices. This is the 2026-10-26 snapshot. Sellers move prices weekly; the row is a pointer and the product page is the only live number.
- Category labels. The source catalogue files a bracelet under hoodies and a sticker under shoes. The tier table shows those rows as they are rather than silently cleaning them up.

Budget questions, answered plainly
How many Kakobuy rows are actually under $20?
69 of 307 — 22%. The tier median is $15.32 and the range runs from $0.18 (a World Cup sticker) to $19.97 (a capped cap). Cheap rows exist, but they are concentrated in one shelf: 39 of the 69 are headwear.
Is there anything worth buying under $20?
Caps and T-shirts, yes: 13 T-shirts sit under $20 with a median of $17.02, and the cheapest is $14.58, which is a real garment at a normal retail price. What you will not find is footwear — the single row filed under Shoes in this tier is a $0.18 football sticker, not a pair.
Why does a $20 item not cost $20?
Because freight is charged per parcel, not per item. A single economy parcel starts at $12.50 for the first kilo plus $2.20 handling, and import VAT is charged on goods plus freight. A $15.32 cap lands at about $35.86 — freight alone is 35% of the bill.
What is the cheapest possible landed cost?
About $17.54: the $0.18 sticker plus $12.50 freight, $2.20 handling and $2.66 VAT. There is no ordering path under roughly $15, whatever the shelf price says — which is the single most useful thing to know about "budget finds" lists.
Does bundling really beat buying one item at a time?
Yes, because the floor is per parcel. Five $15.32 caps in one 1.2 kg parcel cost about $112.04 landed, against $179.31 as five separate parcels — the freight per item drops from $12.50 to $2.84. That arithmetic, not the shelf price, is what makes a budget order cheap.
